We opened the first Works Bakery Café in 1988 in Manchester, Vermont, as an alternative to the fast food chains and their extreme focus on the bottom line—often at the expense of good food and a healthy planet. That's why we buy from family farmers whenever possible. We also go out of our way to avoid agribusiness and their pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and highly efficient (but highly stressful) CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operations.)
Of course, it takes a watchful eye to make good food, which is why we prepare most of our ingredients in-house, from scratch. From our flavored cream cheese to the roasted vegetables and spreads in our sandwiches, we only use the freshest ingredients: hand-chopped and blended daily in every one of our cafés.
It only takes a little care to eat better and live better ... for a better planet. We believe that when we buy good, healthy vegetables, meat and dairy products it creates demand that helps family farmers do more business. And that's better business for us all.
